Spotter day JG 71, Wittmund 18-05-2006

On May the 18th Wittmund Air Force Base hosted again a spotter day. Wittmund is nowadays the largest Phantom Operating Base in Germany. Last year Hopsten closed and in 2007 Neuburg will become operational on the Eurofighter. JG 71 will fly the Phantom into the next decade.

As with previous spotter days at Wittmund there is an interesting static and you can watch the flying operations, although you have the sun in your face, which makes it difficult to photograph. When we drove to Wittmund we hoped that this sun would break through the rain clouds. The sun succeeded just after we arrived at the platform!

On static display were Bo105 and EC 135 helicopters of the HEER, an Atlantique of the Marine, a Tornado ECR and IDS of the Luftwaffe and from Wittmund a British Aerospace Skyhawk and two Phantoms. One of the Phantoms was the 37+11, the farewell plane of Hopsten. Also some classic JG 71 aircraft could be seen, like a Messerschmidt Bf-109 and a Starfighter. During the spotter day seven Phantoms and one Skyhawk were flying.
